How to Interpret 2023 Math Kangaroo Score Reports

The scores and award results of the 2023 Math Kangaroo Contest have been announced. Congratulations to all the award winners and participants for pushing their limits!

What is the format of the Math Kangaroo Contest and its scoring method?

The Math Kangaroo Contest is a single-round test that lasts for 75 minutes. Grades 1-4 have 24 questions, while grades 5-12 have 30 questions.

The difficulty of the questions is divided into three levels: 3 points (easy), 4 points (medium), and 5 points (difficult). All the questions are multiple-choice with five different options.

Calculators are not allowed, and students can only perform calculations on scratch paper.

For scoring, each correct answer earns points, while unanswered or incorrect answers do not earn any points. There is no negative marking for wrong answers.

How to check Math Kangaroo Contest scores? How to interpret the scorecard?

  1. Go to: https://mathkangaroo.oasis-lms.com.
  2. Log in using the account you created when registering your child for the Math Kangaroo Contest.
  3. Click on “My Registration” in the left toolbar.
  4. Enter the exam center where your child participated this year
  5. Click on “Event Details” to view the scores and rankings.
  6. Click on the blue “Download Certificate” button to download the exam result report.
  7. The score report displays the following items and their corresponding interpretations:

How are the national and state-level awards selected for the Math Kangaroo Contest?

National Awards:

The top 20 students with the highest scores in each participating grade level are listed in the National Awards, with “National Rank” displayed as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, and 20. These rankings are determined separately for each grade level across the United States.

For example, in grades 1-4, the student with the highest score may receive a perfect score of 96, the second-highest score could be 93 (missing one three-point question), the third-highest score might be 92 (missing one four-point question), and the fourth-highest score could be 91 (missing one five-point question). In recent years, there have been multiple students achieving the same score for each point, and there is a high probability of multiple students sharing the same rank. The same applies to grades 5-12.

National Prizes:

  • The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places receive gold, silver, and bronze medals, respectively.
  • Prizes vary based on grade level for the top-10-ranked students.
  • The top-20-ranked students receive Math Kangaroo Excellence Award magnets.

State Awards:

The top three students with the highest scores in each state will be listed in the State Excellence Awards, ranking as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in their respective state levels, displayed as “State Rank” 1, 2, and 3. The awardees will be presented with blue, red, and white ribbons, respectively.

Similarly, for Level 1-4, the maximum possible score is 96, and for Level 5-12, it is 120. The highest score in each state for a specific grade level will be ranked as 1st, the second-highest score as 2nd, and so on.

In the 2023 Math Kangaroo Contest, a total of 1,830 participants nationwide achieved the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd positions in their respective states.

The selection of national and state-level awards does not conflict, and participants can receive both awards simultaneously.

About Math Kangaroo

What is the Math Kangaroo Contest?

The Math Kangaroo Contest, also known as MK, originated in Australia in 1980 and was officially named “Kangaroo” in France in 1991. It started in the United States in 1998 and is a math competition for students in grades 1-12. MK has become one of the most popular math competitions for lower-grade students in the United States.

MK assesses students’ logical reasoning skills and their ability to creatively solve problems. It is a comprehensive math competition that requires the application of concepts that are not typically taught in the Common Core mathematics curriculum.

It is an opportunity for students to showcase their math skills and test their critical thinking abilities. For many children, MK is their first math competition. Additionally, many students who perform well in the Math Kangaroo Contest go on to achieve success in other competitions such as the AMC 8, AMC 10, and even AMC 12!

When is the registration and examination time for the Math Kangaroo Contest?

The regular registration window for MK is usually from September to December. In 2023, the new season registration will open on September 15th, with an early bird registration fee of $21.

MK is always held on the third Thursday of March. In 2024, MK will take place on March 21st.

Registration can be done online or offline.

How many levels are there in the Math Kangaroo Contest? Which grade levels are suitable for participation?

MK has a total of 12 levels, corresponding to students from grades 1 to 12.

Levels 1-2 have the same set of questions, meaning that students in grades 1 and 2 face the same difficulty level in the contest. However, the ranking and awards are calculated separately for each grade level. Same for Levels 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, and so on.

According to the latest data from 2023, the 26th MK had a total of 36,421 participants across the United States, reaching a new record high in terms of participation. Over 73% of the participants were in grades 1-5. The grade level with the highest number of participants was 4th grade, totaling 6,039 students, which accounted for 16.6% of the total.

Think Academy recommends students in grades 1-4 participate in MK, while students in 4th grade and above can focus on preparing for the AMC series of competitions.
