It can sometimes be a struggle to get your little one enthusiastic about math and problem-solving. Completing worksheet after worksheet or test after test is definitely an overwhelming cycle for young minds. However, there are multiple different routes that you can take as a parent to boost your child’s math interest. One way to achieve this goal is through playing math-themed games. Unlike worksheets or tests, math games can be fun, interactive, and allow your child to get creative. In addition, the overall goal of winning a game can motivate them to learn math-related material without them even realizing it! Monopoly 

The first game on this list of best math learning games is Monopoly. Monopoly is a great way to introduce your child to the concept of money and budgeting. Having them count how much they need to buy a certain piece of property will certainly help sharpen their skills with addition. 

On top of that, Monopoly is effective at strengthening children’s critical thinking abilities as well. In order to win the game, one must plan which properties to buy at what time. Overall, Monopoly is a solid game choice and will have your little one determined to improve their arithmetic capabilities so that they can purchase all of the property pieces! 

Sum Swamp 

Although this math board game is not as well-known as Monopoly. Sum Swamp is a huge favorite among parents who have tried it. The main focus of this game is to travel to the other side of the swamp before your opponents do.

In order to do this, every turn you roll dice and move a certain amount of spaces. However, there is a catch to this! The only way to figure out exactly how many spaces you need to move is by solving a math equation. Through playing this game, your child will be mastering their addition and subtraction skills in no time. Not to mention, the visuals and artwork of the game are extremely vibrant and colorful.  

Chess

At first, Chess may not appear to be a game that promotes math. However, Chess presents so many great opportunities to introduce your child to problem solving. Not only does it help them practice counting through calculating how many spaces it takes each piece to make a move. 

It is also the perfect way for them to foster a passion for logical thinking. As most people already know, Chess is a game that requires a lot of strategy and planning. The same can be said with solving complex math questions. Because of this, Chess prepares young students to be able to think ahead and understand how to work through mathematical problems.

Math Dice Jr.

Math Dice Jr. is another excellent game to help improve children’s addition and subtraction abilities. The game involves rolling one 12-sided die and five six-sided dice. Once you know what number the 12-sided die landed on, players must use the numbers from the six-sided dice to come up with addition and subtraction formulas that equal the number on the 12-sided die.

The first player to figure out which math formula equals the number on the 12-sided die wins and collects all of the dice. Players get to move forward by one space for each die that they grab. Not only is Math Dice Jr. fun and exciting, it also increases the quickness of children’s calculation skills!

Sudoku 

Once your child begins to grasp the more basic math concepts, Sudoku is the perfect game for them to try next. In a nutshell, Sudoku is a logical thinking based math puzzle game. The main objective is to fill in the grid with all of the numbers one through nine. 

Although this game may seem difficult for your child at first. It just takes practice to master! If your child likes to complete puzzles at home, then Sudoku is the perfect way for them to have fun filling in puzzles while boosting their math and critical thinking skills in the process. In addition, there are also multiple different difficulty levels of Sudoku puzzles. Start them off with the easiest level and go from there!
