For parents who do not know about Nueva, here’s an introduction to this Bay Area top school:

  • IQ Test Score Threshold: 130
  • Focuses on Socio-Emotional Learning
  • Interdisciplinary Education
  • Tuition: Pre-K $29k, Kindergarten $37k, Grade 1 $37k

Pre-K to Grade 1 population distribution:

  • Pre-K: one class with 14-18 students
  • Kindergarten: two classes with 14-15 students
  • Grade 1: two classes with 18 students

Pre-K has 14-18 students per year with 35-70 people sending in applications. The acceptance rate is equivalent to 20%-50% which does not sound scary. However, Pre-K does not accept children whose IQ is less than 130.

On the other hand, there is an obvious expansion in the number of people between Pre-K and kindergarten which is a good entry point. However, the competition is also fierce. In fact, for the curriculum, there is an obvious separation point from Pre-K to kindergarten that we will mention below.

Admission Test

Nueva requires IQ testing from Pre-K to Grade 8 and it undergoes two tests: WPPSI-IV or WISC-V.

These two tests are very similar to the test module, but there are still slight differences.

WPPSI-IV:

Block Design, Information, Matrix Reasoning, Bug Search, Picture Memory, Similarities, Picture Concepts, and Cancellation.

WISC-V:

Block Design, Similarities, Matrix Reasoning, Digit Span, Coding, Vocabulary, Figure Weights, Visual Puzzles, Picture Span, Symbol Search, and Arithmetic.

A licensed clinical psychologist must be present during the exam. If they realize that your child has been exposed to the test content before, the test results will be considered invalid. The exam can only be taken once a year.

Intelligence and high IQ are key for Nueva children

Most children with a high IQ will show academic intelligence. The most important goal of the Nueva Admissions Review is to identify academic intelligence. The IQ exam is one of the ways to identify this trait. A score of 130 is the entry threshold for IQ testing.

Among the applicants, more than 130 children will be invited to the school for a two-hour game day with group activities and design thinking. Nueva will look at the children’s communication skills, collaboration skills, and independent thinking abilities. There will also be a parent interview.

Surprisingly, we often hear that Nueva rejects children whose IQ is over 140. While other children who have an IQ of 130 are admitted. Why is this?

Because for Nueva, the same IQ scores usually indicate lots of differences. The FSIQ of the IQ test can reflect the different abilities of children. According to their own exposures, if one’s language is not English, the language ability that is demonstrated in the early stages of childhood will naturally be lower compared to native English speakers.

Therefore, the admissions team will integrate the family background and the ability modules displayed by the child. Afterwards, they will discuss these achievements together as a team. It has nothing to do with the score or whether or not the student can adapt to the environment.
