How to Work Through These Math Worksheets with Your Child
Whether your child is a math whiz or someone who needs a little help, these Thanksgiving math worksheets are for every child at every level. Below are some tips on how to work through these math worksheets for your child.
For the kid who can finish their homework in 10 minutes
Instead of handing over all the worksheets to your child at the same time, only to walk back after loading up the dishes and seeing all the problems solved, have your child walk you through their problem solving method.
Once a day or once a week, whichever cadence works best with your schedule, give your kid one of the worksheets that’s appropriate for their grade. After they’ve completed the problem, have them play the role of teacher, and explain how they worked out the answer.
When students switch gears and teach the content of a lesson, they develop a deeper and longer-lasting understanding of the material. So in substitute of having your child solve these worksheets on auto-mode, give them an opportunity to pause and really understand the material.
For the kid who is afraid of math
Not everyone loves math or naturally understands it, and that’s ok. Math anxiety is real, and as a parent, it’s your job to help your child work through that. If you have a kid who spends hours on their math homework, help them work through our worksheets with these tips.
- Encourage questions: If your child is stuck, instead of giving them the answer, have them ask a series of questions. What is the problem asking? What do they think they should do? Is there another way to solve this problem? Once they realize they can solve the problem, their confidence will grow and their fear of math will lessen.
- Take one worksheet at a time: Don’t focus on how fast your child works through the problems. Instead, focus on their calculation accuracy. If it takes your little one 20 minutes to come up with the correct answer, that’s ok. Calculation accuracy always comes before calculation speed.
- Celebrate the wins: When your child correctly solves a worksheet, celebrate them! Every kid needs encouragement, especially when they overcome a challenge. So don’t just move on to the next worksheet. Tell them you’re proud of them and remind them how much they’ve grown!
For the kid who needs some extra fun
So your child understands math, is good at math, but doesn’t find math very fun or interesting. That’s ok, we got you covered. To keep your child engaged with these Thanksgiving math worksheets, follow these tips.
- Make it about the kids: Make the learning more authentic and substitute the names of people you know in these worksheet word problems to create a real-life math world. This exercise makes math problems more interesting and relatable.
- Let your child make their own problems: After solving one of these worksheets, encourage your child to come up with a similar problem for you to solve. Children love to see the problems they create solved by family members and friends.
