A list of some of the best online math games to keep your child academically active over the summer

As we all know, at times it can be a bit difficult to introduce your child to the subject of math. Math contains so many different numbers, formulas, and equations that the topic can become overwhelming for young learners. However, sometimes trying a new approach can make a huge difference! Instead of introducing them to math through worksheets and flashcards which can become tiresome fairly quickly. Similar to math board games and puzzles such as Monopoly, Sudoku, and Yahtzee, online math games are another great way for your child to improve their math skills while having fun. In this article, we will provide you with some of the best online math games to play with your little one!

Number Bonds

Number Bonds is an interactive online math game that is perfectly suitable for elementary school students. The objective of this game is fairly simple to grasp. A ball with a random number on it will be placed into a cannon. Your child must aim and shoot that ball at a separate row of numbered balls that are circling around the cannon. 

However, in order to destroy the balls and prevent them from moving all the way around. The ball that your child shoots and the ball that it touches must equal the target sum. The target sum can vary between 10, 20, 30, or 40 depending on which version of the game you are playing. 

For example, if the ball that is in the cannon has the number 6 on it. That means that your child must fire it at a ball with the number 4 on it in order for them to be destroyed. Overall, Number Bonds is a great option for helping your little one improve their basic addition skills!

Making Change 

This next online math game is awesome for boosting your child’s subtraction abilities. In addition, it also serves as a solid way to introduce your child to real-world math problems involving money. 

For this game, your child will be shown both how much money an item costs and how much money the customer paid. The objective is to help the cashier figure out how much money in change is needed to be given back to the customer. Each round, the cashier will provide dollar and coin options for your child to choose from. The correct options must be selected to move on to the next round. 

For instance, if an item costs $8.80 and the customer paid $10.00 to the cashier. Then a correct answer would be selecting a one dollar bill and two dimes from the options to get the right amount of change.

Fruit Splat 

Fruit Splat is a very straightforward math game that focuses on improving elementary students’ arithmetic skills. For this game, your child will be given an addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division problem to solve. On screen, there will be multiple different types of fruit that have numbers on them. 

In order to receive a point, your child must splatter the fruit with the correct number on it. For example, if the question on screen is 9×4, then a piece of fruit with the number 36 on it would solve the equation! In general, think of this game as a more educational version of Fruit Ninja.

Algebraic Reasoning Sweet Shop

This next online game is geared more toward middle school students. As stated in the title, the goal of this game is to strengthen students’ familiarity with basic algebra problems. 

As for how to play this game, each round your child will be given stacks of different types of candy. In addition, there will be a total cost underneath each stack. The goal of this game is to figure out the individual value of each type of candy. For instance, if there are seven pieces of one type of candy on the table and the price below is 77 cents. That would mean that each piece of candy is worth 11 cents. 

One piece of advice is to have your little one write out the algebraic expressions on a piece of paper so that the questions are easier to solve!

High Stakes Heist 

This last game on our list of best online math games is also perfect for middle school students and will help significantly improve order of operations skills. For this game, students are asked to crack the safe combination by solving a complicated problem one step at a time. Below is an example of one of the questions. 

One of the best parts about this game is that if your child accidentally uses the incorrect order of operations for a specific step. The game will let them go back to the previous step and fix their error!
